One Shot: Hannah Blackmore

If you don’t already know I have taken to Pinterest with a vengeance. There’s something about seeing an image that kind of takes your breath away and being able to make a statement about it.

So welcome to what I am now calling One Shot.  One image, that for whatever reason makes me stop in my tracks and muse over it.

The above image courtesy of  Desire to Inspire has done just that.  I so absolutely love the floor in this room its ridiculous.  This flooring is very similar to what we have chosen for our kitchen so I am über excited. I have a thing for rectangles and offset tiling so the tile on the rear wall makes me smile.  The colors are calming ( to me) and the whole feel is still chic.  I could see myself wearing “casual slacks” and sipping coffee in this space.

What do you think?

Space to Take My Breath Away

Pleasant Valley contemporary bedroom
So, it has been long decided that grey, in many of its forms will be a staple in the new spaces. In my mind I really kept seeing accent colors that really popped like turquoise, purple or fuchsia.

I had dangled the idea of a neutral sofa to the hubs, to lukewarm response… But now I’m seeing these images and I feel reborn!  I know I gravitate toward high style glitz and glamour, but I do honestly want something that is stylish yet comfortable and easily manageable.  I don’t want to cringe when someone flops in one of our chairs ( though that is a bit rude, don’t ya think?)

Use of dove-gray and grayish blues with pale sand colors is really resonating with me.  We have purposely chosen kitchen colors that are NOT in the toasty caramel brown family (can you say DONE TO DEATH!) The cabinets are espresso very dark and the floors are called mudslide, which is also very dark and chocolatey.  The granite also leans a bit to the gray side.  It’s all very encouraging folks!!

My one caveat on going in this direction would really be to avoid at all cost event the slightest hint or reference to the beach.  No seashells, no bead board or white wainscoting. Though not far from the water and in an area known for waterish types of things, we’re just not those people.
Everything about this makes me smile.  It’s cool and light and airy, it feels spacious and comfortable. It’s stylish and intentional but not pretentious.  And it’s not girly so the hubs will offer a thumbs up! WHOO HOO!!!
Its gonna be a good day!

Purple Piece de Resistance…

So hold on to your seats.  Here is a little something that makes me scratch my head.  It’s Purple.  A favorite color of many but there is just something about it… I mean a little purple here or there is cool, but it is SOOOOOOO easy to go too far.

I would like to incorporate this color in one of our spaces but before I can competently broach the subject to the hubs I needed to really have some ammunition.  Most of what I found when I did my cursory Google search on “purple furniture” was horrific.  Just because it’s purple doesn’t mean it has to be futuristic and gaudy does it?

There will be a predominant palette of greys in the home upon its completion. Purple is such a great accent color and will just reek of sophistication when splashed around. One piece we have been on the hunt for is a chaise lounge for the master bedroom, how great would it be to laze around sipping coffee and reading the paper on our His and Hers Ipads…

My other problem with purple is matching it.  I’ve never been the matchy-matchy type but even getting two unrelated pieces of furniture(that you have not upholstered yourself) to even be in the same family as it pertains to undertones and the like is a nightmare. I like a grapey purple with plenty of blue in it.  I don think one piece will be enough, but finding that one piece….well, the search is on…

Mix and Match It

color play

So here we find ourselves again with a cacophony of patterns.  These really do work together well but I fear they are still a bit too much of a shock to the system.

As with most of the images I seem to gravitate toward there are about a hundred elements that I crave from this room.  Due to space confines of the new first floor living area, I love the idea of adding in a couple of ottomans perhaps in lieu of a pair of matching armchairs.

Unfortunately or maybe not, I have secured to GORGEOUS armchairs that will become an upholstery project in the near future. Perhaps they could work in the Master bedroom, since we’ve decided all of our furniture for the most part will be in the spiffy new closet giving us the sense of space we’ve longed for in the boudoir…

The couch is another great piece, it’s a little less dramatic than a previous highlight which will probably sit a little better with the hubs. The armchairs work well here with the ottomans… hmmmm could both be in my future??

I also had not given thought to an area rug in the main living area, but I do declare that THAT idea has made it into the final round.  we are having the original floors refinished and darkened just a bit and the cabinets in the kitchen will be an espresso, in color ( see we have made some decisions 🙂 so an area rug could be a great space refiner without crowding AND add a pop of color. Yay!!!! I like!

Making a Statement

In Design Options, Living Room, real estate on April 18, 2012 at 1:14 PM

This picture makes me tilt my head like a little puppy.  On the one hand I really cannot see myself living here. But on the other hand, if I look at the individual elements, I find that I really like most if not all of the pieces in the space.

I stopped at the picture initially because I am searching for a signature piece for the space.  We are blowing out all the walls on the first floor  so I am losing a great deal of wall space for hanging things.  I love art and really want a piece somewhere on that floor.  I think the wall hanging here is very cool!

Perhaps it’s just the coloring of the space that I’m not a fan of. The side chairs are great. And I do like the mix of textures, though the hubs can only venture so far mixing and matching in a room (though he can work wonders with ties and shirts…)

Ultimately, I think we are going for something a little less fussy and a little more streamline. Decor is tough with so many options to sway your attention.  Lots of stuff looks great…for a minute.  I guess I have to give lots of stuff their 15 minutes before we actually finalize and install.

So Pretty… Brings Tears To My Eyes!

In Bedroom, Design Options, Fantastic Listings, Kitchens, Living Room, real estate on April 18, 2012 at 11:30 AM

Yes, I am in love. Madly, passionately head over heels with lustful infatuation…. This property literally makes me just weep!  Now I know it’s not for everybody but luckily I don’t have a desire to live with everybody and since it’s located in London, I will have no problem convincing my hubs to run away with me.

Now I will give you, that there is way too much white for my personal tastes, but if I could wave my color wand here and there, i don’t think I would change anything else.  I love the style and the furnishings.

I have requested a fireplace in our new Master bedroom, however based on the current price tag, I may have to enlarge a photo and stick it on the wall…. Believe it or not, I have a bead on a headboard being made for us.  Shape wise it is similar to the above,  now the decision is will it be tufted or just over the top like this one. Don’t know yet.  My mother would give her left elbow for this set up.  I do get it from her and I am quite sure that I JUST SAID I was trying to shy away from some of here influences…but this is just heaven (to me!)

I am equally as sure that all of the light in this space is grabbing at my heart as much as the style that it exudes. I cold sleep upright in these chairs….

Despite it being all white; this is exactly what I was referring to when I spoke earlier of being styled yet comfortable.  I could definitely see having friends over and kicking back in this space for a glass of wine or a game of Scrabble 🙂

All in all I love it.  It gives me hope that this entire project will ultimately end up as something I will be able to swoon over just as much. (Even if we don’t get to move to London…)
